In the past I have used bingo cards and pictionary. However when a recent observation was looming I wanted to try something more creative.

For the main activity of the lesson I asked students to select a grid square from an OS map and draw a bold black line around it. Students were then provided with plasticine and an enlarged square on an plain A3 piece of paper (5 times the size) of the OS map grid square. Students were asked to model the features found in their selected grid square using the plasticine on their enlarged square.

This activity requires students to not only take into account compass directions, but also the scale of each feature i.e. trees, housing.
