In the hope of developing students’ confidence of OS maps. I have attempted to embed a range of map skills across our key stage three curriculum.

One of my favourite lessons involves students using six figure grid references to map crime in their local area.

First, I gathered recent crime statistics using Using this online database I located a range of crimes from shoplifting to anti-social behaviour on a local OS map. These locations were then transferred to a handout, composed of a list of six figure grid references linked to a OS map downloaded from Digimaps for schools.

During the lesson, students were asked to locate each crime using the six figure grid references and plot these on their OS map.

To develop the activity further, students were asked to describe and suggest reasons for the distribution. This gave students the opportunity to further apply their local knowledge and geographical understanding.

By the end of the lesson, students appeared confident with six figure grid references. Mission accomplished!
