Lion. By Saroo Brierley

A book emphasising the possibilities of GISc.

Lion is the true story of a five-year-old boy who gets lost on a train in India which results in him sleeping rough on the streets of Calcutta for several weeks. Before being placed in an orphanage and adopted by an Australian couple from Tasmania.

During his early adulthood, Saroo uses the capabilities of Google Earth to scan hundreds, if not thousands, of aerial scenes along various train lines away from Calcutta, in the hopes of finding a series of landmarks and geographical features in relation to one another in order to find his long lost family and, ultimately, find his way home (see image below).

This heartfelt story demonstrates the benefits and power of mental mapping, helping us become familiar with our surroundings and find our way, even from a young age.

Recommended age range: KS4+, due to some gory references to child trafficking, murder and abuse of children.
