Disaster by choice. By Ilan Kelman

‘Disasters are not natural. We-humanity and society- create them and we can choose to prevent them.’

I strongly recommend this book for any of you teaching tectonics at A-Level, or have a strong interest in natural disasters.

The focus for discussion, in Chapter One, is largely centred around the impacts associated with the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. The author provides an in-depth discussion of Haiti’s vulnerability to natural hazards, drawing on its history, geographical location, population demographic and more. This chapter alone could be considered a great resource for students to read and reference when exploring Haiti’s vulnerability to hazards through a Degg or PAR model.

The remaining chapters discuss a wide range of hazard vulnerabilities from wealth, gender, clothing, education, culture, society, infrastructure and government policies.
